Why Our Work Matters
New Jersey is marked by its extraordinary
social, economic, environmental and religious diversity.
It's the most densely populated state in
the nation yet with no city of a million people or more.
It has the highest per person income in the nation yet with
significant portions of the state mired in seemingly intractable
poverty. It's a state infamous for its suburban sprawl yet
with vast tracts of undeveloped land (such as the Pine Barrens
). Perhaps most important, New Jerseyans are more racially
and ethnically diverse than the people of any other state
in the country.
This diversity presents a singular opportunity
for an interfaith, religiously grounded approach to make
a significant impact on the health of New Jersey 's environment.
Because, sadly, New Jersey is also a national
leader in environmental health threats. New Jerseyans - including
children - in two-thirds of its counties breathe air that
does not meet federal health standards. Pediatric asthma
is widespread. Every New Jersey resident lives within ten
miles of a Superfund site – one
of the most toxic waste sites in the US.
Our religious traditions
command us to be good stewards of the earth. Representing
more than two thirds of the state’s
residents, New Jersey ’s religious communities are
a powerful untapped force for environmental leadership.
At
a time when religious conflicts dominate the headlines,
GreenFaith knows that care for the environment can bring
people of diverse faiths together to create a future where
the earth and all life flourishes. Our programs make this
happen every day.
