Sample Letter to Gov. Corzine on Diesel Emissions
GreenFaith invites you to print a copy of the letter below
to sign and send to Gov. Corzine. Do it today!
The Honorable Jon Corzine
Governor, State
of New Jersey
The State House
PO Box 001
Trenton, NJ 08625
Dear Governor Corzine:
I am asking you to
help clean up New Jersey’s air
and protect the health of all New Jerseyans by issuing an
Executive Order requiring state contractors to retrofit their
diesel-powered on and off road vehicles.
I am writing this
letter in cooperation with GreenFaith, New Jersey ’s
interfaith environmental coalition. GreenFaith believes that
the earth is a gift to us from God, that every person has
a right to a healthy environment, and that environmental
protection is a moral responsibility. I agree, and hope that
our state can create and implement policies that turn the
latter two statements from beliefs into action here in our
state.
As you know, last election day New Jersey
voters passed Ballot Question 2 to begin reducing diesel
pollution. This will result in the allocation of funds to
retrofit the most heavily-polluting school buses, transit
buses, and garbage trucks in New Jersey, eliminating up
to 400 tons of diesel soot pollution a year – roughly
10 percent of New Jersey ’s
total diesel pollution.
This is a good start.
We need to keep moving
forward. We want your help.
A study by the national Clean
Air Task Force reports that to bring New Jersey into compliance
with Federal Air Quality standards for diesel emissions,
these emissions need to drop by 75%.
Until that happens,
- Our children will suffer thousands of dangerous, avoidable
asthma attacks.
- Hundreds of our fellow New Jerseyans will die prematurely
each year.
- We will all be subject to risk for cancer due to diesel
emissions at a level many times higher than Federal standards.
I ask you to help us win the fight to eliminate diesel
emissions as an environmental health threat in New Jersey
. Please commit to issuing an Executive Order requiring all
state contractors to retrofit their diesel-powered on and
off road vehicles.
Sincerely,
Name:

"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
words, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,'
motivate me to include the struggles against environmental
racism and economic injustice in my lifelong commitment to
social justice activism. No group of people should be forced
to bear the disproportionate burdens of having incinerators,
landfills, sewage treatment plants, oil refineries, and other
polluters in their communities because of the color of their
members’ skin or income level."
