Tour of Newark, 2003 & 2005

Fish advisory sign

A number of Newark residents – some of them recent immigrants, some of them poor – have traditionally eaten fish caught in the Passaic River to supplement their diets. This photo shows a fish advisory sign, posted below the anti-dumping sign, and offered in both English and Portuguese, warning residents that it is illegal to eat fish caught in the Passaic because of dangerously high pollution levels.
