One of the environmental health problems
in densely populated urban areas is the shortage of open space for community
residents. Research shows a direct correlation between the amount of
open space in urban communities and a number of indicators of social
wellbeing and health.
Newark, unfortunately, is no exception to this trend.
This photo shows piles of containers which have been abandoned on
riverfront property in Newark. Emblematic of the US trade deficit, these
containers brought goods to the US from overseas, but have been abandoned
because of decreased demand for US goods abroad. Community groups are
pressing to have these containers removed and the land on which they
sit turned into a community park.
