GreenFaith Announces Subsidies for Sustainable Synagogues Inititiave

Support for Conservative Synagogues for GreenFaith Certification

GreenFaith announces tuition subsidies for Conservative synagogues as part of the Sustainable Synagogues Initiative.

Nov 23, 2010

NEW YORK, NY —  The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the interfaith environmental coalition GreenFaith announced the availability of tuition subsidies for Conservative synagogues for the GreenFaith Certification Program.  GreenFaith will offer four 50% tuition subsidies and 5 additional 15% subsidies to Conservative synagogues during each of the three years of the Sustainable Synagogues Initiative.  The application deadline for the tuition subsidies is May 1, 2011.  Tuition subsidies will be awarded based on need and strength of synagogues’ applications.

An Opportunity for Leadership

The GreenFaith Certification Program is the world’s first comprehensive, interfaith, environmental certification program.  Over 2 years, participating institutions carry out a range of initiatives to integrate environmental themes into their worship, religious education, facility maintenance, and social outreach. Through a combination of required and elective activities, required and elective activities, these institutions earn certification as a GreenFaith Sanctuary.

Learn the Details

GreenFaith will offer free webinars so that interested synagogue leaders can learn more about this opportunity.  The hour-long webinars will be on:

Monday, Dec. 20, 7:00 pm ET
Tuesday, Jan. 18, 3:00 pm ET

Recordings of the webinars will be available on-line.  To register for a webinar, contact Stacey Kennealy, Director of the Certification Program, at skennealy@greenfaith.org.  Please indicate the webinar time you are interested in, your name, and the name and address of your synagogue.

Representatives of synagogues interested in this opportunity are strongly encouraged to take part in one of the webinars or to listen to the recording.  The Certification Program application process requires commitments from multiple synagogue leaders and takes the average congregation 3-4 months to complete successfully.

Extensive Support Prepares Synagogues to Succeed

GreenFaith provides extensive programmatic support to participating congregations.  Six webinars equip synagogue leaders to complete the Certification Program successfully.  An online center with over 200 resources helps congregations meet the program’s requirements.  GreenFaith’s staff is available via phone and email to provide support.  A network of congregations nationwide shares best practices and success stories on-line.

When congregations begin the Certification Program, they audit their facilities and programs and create an action plan.  They ‘green’ their facilities, saving energy and water, using non-toxic cleaning and maintenance practices, increasing recycling, and eating healthy food.  They offer environmentally-themed worship services and education for children, teens and adults.  They advocate for a healthier environment for poor communities.  They conduct interfaith programming, and share their progress with the media.  Participating Conservative synagogues will serve as eco-mentors to other synagogues nationwide and will share their experiences at regional and national events.

“The Certification Program is a great approach to making a synagogue a ‘green’ leader,” said Kennealy.  “We look forward to working with the Conservative community on this effort.”
