Christian Prayers for Water

Prayers that Christian communities can use on their GreenFaith Day

1. Call to Worship - The Waters of New Life

We gather to worship God, the Lord and Giver of Life.

God gives us the waters of new life.

In the deserts of our lives, in the wilderness within,

God gives us the waters of new life.

To give us hope when our lives run dry, to give us strength when our world seems barren.

God gives us the waters of new life.

To let peace flow like a river and love spring forth like a fountain,

God gives us the waters of new life.

To make justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a living stream,

God gives us the waters of new life.

To give us-- and our world-- a second chance and a new beginning,

God gives us the waters of new life.

Come, people of God, open your lives to receive God’s new life. Open your hearts to sing God’s praise.

The Rev. Talitha Arnold, United Church of Santa Fe, NM

2. A Prayer of Invocation

As a deer longs for living streams, as a weary traveler longs for the waters of life, so our souls long for you, O God. Refresh us, cleanse us, heal us with your living water. Pour out your Spirit upon us so our lives might overflow with your love. Pour out your Spirit upon all creation so that justice might roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. Amen.

The Rev. Talitha Arnold, United Church of Santa Fe, NM

3. A Prayer for Rain

May God open the heavens and let His mercy rain down upon our fields and mountains.  Let us especially pray for those most impacted by water shortages and for the wisdom and charity to be good stewards of this precious gift.  May our political leaders seek the common good as we learn to care and share God's gift of water for the good of all.  In Jesus Name, AMEN.

Bishop Jaime Soto, Catholic Diocese of Sacramento

4. A Prayer for Rain

O God, in Whom we live move and have our being, grant us sufficient rain, so that, being supplied with what sustains us in this present life, we may seek more confidently what sustains us for eternity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

From The Roman Missal of the Catholic Church, #35

5. Prayer for All Creation in a Time of Drought and Fire

God of all creation, of rain and fire, of desert and forest, we your people lift our prayers to you.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For rain in this thirsty land and for hope in this hard time,

Lord, hear our prayer.

For firefighters on the front lines, for pilots and support crews and all who are working night and day to contain devastating fires,

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the people of (this region) who have lost their homes, communities and livelihoods, for (Native peoples and/or long-time residents) whose homeland for generations is now scorched and burned, for all persons who have been forced to evacuate or who are still in danger,

Lord, hear our prayer.

For all the animals and birds who have also lost their homes to fire, for your plants and trees,

rivers and lakes, and all creation that is suffering because of drought and fire and often because of human greed or human carelessness,

Lord, hear our prayer.

For farmers, ranchers, and the people of rural communities whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by drought; for landscapers, business people and day workers who may lose their jobs in this dry time.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the just and wise use of the water you have given us, to be gracious stewards of your creation and good neighbors with all people,

Lord, hear our prayer.

For the wisdom to conserve and the grace to share the natural resources you have given all of us.

Lord, hear our prayer.

For city councils and church councils, county commissions and tribal governments, state authorities and national leaders, to have your courage and your vision to make hard decisions for the common good.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Gracious God, you who hear every prayer of every heart, hear now the prayers of this people we lift to you. Hear all of our prayers, spoken and unspoken.  Remind us that you are the One who listens and who hears.

Help us to be a people who also listen and hear—to one another, to our brothers and sisters, to all creation.  Give us the courage; grant us the wisdom to love one another and this earth as you do.  We pray in your name, AMEN.

Send Your Living Waters

God who called us forth from the dust

And watered our lands with countless streams and great rivers

We thank you for the garden you have set us to dwell in.

…  And so, as of old, we turn again to the sky:

Send your living waters upon us

Sprinkle us again with your purifying rains

Make your mountains fill with dancing streams

Your valleys swell with splashing ponds

As fertile as the River Jordan

As renewing as the waters of baptism

As overflowing as the cup of salvation.

Feed all living things with your life-sustaining water

As you fill them with your grace.

And as we gaze upon this land that so thirsts for your water

Let it remind us of all the thirsts in this world:

The thirst for justice

The thirst for peace

The thirst for opportunity

The thirst for reconciliation

The thirst for hope.

And when your blessings rain from the sky

As assuredly they will

And we kneel again at the pools and fountains

Teach us to cup our hands

And gently,

gracefully,

in solidarity

Turn first, and share with one another.
