Resources, Support and other benefits

Our institution feels we can conduct religious-environmental activities on our own. Why participate in the GreenFaith Certification Program?

There are five basic reasons we believe the GreenFaith Certification Program offers a genuine opportunity and value for religious groups that want to become environmental leaders.

We Can Help Your House of Worship Save Money

We are seeing time and time again that participating institutions save significant money. One synagogue has saved $34,000 by following the Certification Program's energy conservation requirements, another has saved $20,000, and a small church has saved $6,000. The Certification Program's requirements identify the best and easiest opportunities for financial savings, and we hold your hand through the process.  We have the expertise, both through research and experience, to offer up action steps that are highly effective at cutting costs.

GreenFaith Offers Extensive Resources, Support and Experience

GreenFaith has gathered a comprehensive set of resources to support Program participants, and our experienced staff is available to answer your questions throughout the process.  There is no other environmental program in the country that provides such comprehensive support to religious institutions. This support includes free webinars, a password protected website with over 200 resources, a community to share ideas and questions, and one-on-one feedback and mentoring.

You Will Attract New Members and Engage Existing Ones

Participants in the Certification Program are finding that their 'green' successes are attracting new members. Whether through demonstrating leadership to the community with solar panels on the roof, or a front page story about their efforts in the local paper, community members are learning of participants' activities, and then often join the house of worship as a member. In addition, Certification Program participants are offering new and exciting activities for their members, which often provide a new avenue of engagement for those in the congregation who may never have been involved hands-on before.

GreenFaith Unites Leaders from Diverse Religions in a Community of Encouragement and Support.

The GreenFaith Certification Program gives participants the chance to learn from a diverse group of religious institutions – institutions from many different traditions and geographic locations. Participating institutions also have the unique opportunity to build relationships with local environmental organizations. This will be achieved through:

  • A list-serve that helps participating institutions mentor and advise each other.
  • Webinars where institutions can hear questions and answers from their peers.
  • A ‘Sharing Our Story’ webinar, which provides a forum to share experiences and lessons learned.
  • Partnerships with religious institutions from other traditions during events and outreach activities.
  • Connections with local environmental organizations during events and outreach activities.

Through this community of support, positive interfaith relationships develop, and religious leaders connect with other faith-based and environmental leaders in their community and beyond.

Gain Positive Publicity for your Institution

Institutions taking part in the GreenFaith Certification Program have the opportunity to benefit from a substantial amount of public exposure. GreenFaith provides participating institutions with press releases to publicize your accomplishments to the community. GreenFaith also helps institutions publicize their leadership to their denominational leaders, and to environmental groups in their area.

Many participants in the Program have received front-page coverage in local and statewide papers, and it is due to their diligent publicity efforts in the Certification Program.
