Toxics Reduction

Religious institutions and homeowners deal with many toxic chemicals, including cleaners, pesticides and toxic waste. GreenFaith recommends healthier alternatives from institutions and homes.

“If the earth were your body, you would be able to feel the many places where it is suffering. Every day, children and adults die because of the pollution of air and water. These things are related.”

Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist Monk

Most consumers think that if something is sold in the marketplace it must be safe and adequately tested.  However, of the 80,000 synthetic chemicals used in products today, very few have been tested for their effects on human health or the environment.  In addition, there is no law mandating that companies list all ingredients on the label of their products.

Many of the substances used in common cleaning and pest products, as well as the numerous electronic gadgets that surround us, have been linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and respiratory problems, among other ailments.  And none of us are immune - studies have shown that chemicals from everyday products are in our bodies and bloodstreams (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Safe, effective alternatives and practices exist, to enable institutions and homeowners to create a toxin-free environment. Click on the categories below to access tools and resources for both institutions and homeowners:
