Energy Conservation: Getting Started

As an overview, GreenFaith recommends these first steps:

  • Install programmable thermostats. Increase temperature setbacks.
  • Disconnect unnecessary equipment. Turn off computer equipment on power strips.
  • Check seals/weather stripping on windows, doors, refrigerators.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with CFL’s.
  • Retrofit Emergency Exit signs with LED’s.
  • For new appliances, buy Energy Star models.
  • Check meeting schedule to ensure energy-efficient use of space. Small meetings, small rooms.

Additional Resources for Energy Conservation

Additionally, we think you'll find the following link to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star for Congregations website includes many helpful energy resources for houses of worship: http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=small_business.sb_congregations.
