The Disposal of Toxics
The challenge to proper disposal of toxics--from
computer printer ink cartridges to batteries, from paint
to toxic cleansers, pesticides and herbicides--so that they
don't just become part of the regular waste stream and thus
leech into our ground and water--is that every locality has
different regulations, protocols and capabilities.
So the
first step is to contact your local solid waste agency. You
can find them by looking in the blue "government" pages
of your phone book (under such categories as solid waste,
public works or garbage, trash or refuse collection), or
drop by your local city hall. Finally, you can also call
1-800-CLEANUP.
Moreover, if you are not satisfied with the
manner in which your locality accommodates your need for
toxics disposal (or, indeed, recycling)…let it know.
Write letters to the editor, attend town meetings. You have
a voice in the spending of your tax dollars.
