Water Conservation in Religious Institutions

The average religious institution has several opportunities to conserve water.

1. Install faucet flow restrictors.

Faucet flow restrictors (also called aerators), which are included in GreenFaith’s Water Conservation Kit, reduce the flow of water from a faucet by at least 20% by more thoroughly aerating the flow of water.

2. Replace your old Toilet, likely the largest water user inside your institution. Or, install a toilet tank bank.

If your home was built before 1992 and the toilet has never been replaced, then it is very likely that you do not have a water efficient 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. You can check the date stamp inside the toilet by lifting the lid and looking at the back of the toilet at the manufacturer's imprint of the make, model and date of manufacture.
If you do not want to replace your toilet, you can easily install a toilet tank bank, which is part of GreenFaith’s Water Conservation Kit. [click] [link to be provided]

3. Install waterless urinals.

Waterless urinal technology is a major water-saver that is used increasingly in high-traffic public spaces like airports and sports arenas. One of the world’s most famous religious buildings – the Taj Mahal – has been retrofitted with waterless urinals.
To learn more about waterless urinals, see http://oikos.com/green_products/category.php?category_id=755.

4. Plant the Right Plants with Proper Landscape Design & Irrigation.

Whether you are putting in a new landscape or slowing changing the current landscaping at your home, select plants that are appropriate for your local climate conditions. Having a yard with 100% lawn turf area in a dry desert climate uses significant amounts of water. Also consider the trend towards Xeriscape™ and a more natural landscape or wildscape.
To get information about water-efficient landscaping in New Jersey, go to www.rcre.rutgers.edu/county/ to locate your county agricultural extension service that can help you develop a water-efficient landscape design for your lawn and gardens.
